New importer for NodeXL Pro: Bluesky

The BlueSky platform is a growing alternative to the X / formerly Twitter platform that is attracting a lot of attention and new users.

NodeXL Pro now enables access to the BlueSky platform via the new “Import from BlueSky Search Network (Beta)” importer:

Using this social media network data importer you can now use your username and password to log into the BlueSky platform and search for posts with the keywords and search terms you require.

The result is a very familiar social media network analysis. Users of BlueSky post messages and reply to the messages created by others. These actions create connections among the users, and NodeXL maps and measures the collections of these connections to reveal the key people, groups, and topics in the stream of posts.

This network map of the conversations around the term “ChatGPT” reveals distinctive patterns: a large group of “isolates” who mention “ChatGPT” but do not reply to any other users, and no other user has replied to them. The size and proportion of the “isolates” cluster is an indicator of how much the topic is a “brand” or widely discussed topic. If there are few or no isolates, the topic is instead a kind of in-group one (often seen in conferences and specialized topics). The next largest clusters are largely the “hub-and-spoke” structures of “broadcasters” or “influencers”. These clusters have one or just a few people at their center, with many users replying or mentioning the hub account. This pattern is in contrast to “community” in which many accounts all connect to one another, rather than forming a hub-and-spoke pattern.

Each cluster has its own influencers and a distinctive set of topics, hashtags and URLs. Clusters often contain a single language, but different clusters can use different languages.

Maps of social media networks can help reveal the key people at the center of the hub-and-spoke structures. In this data set the key people are:
